What Are My Second-Trimester Pregnancy Options in Florida?

Experiencing an unplanned pregnancy can bring out some of the most vivid fears and worst-case scenarios, but it’s important to remember that you have options! Whether you just found out you’re pregnant or are past the first trimester, it’s important that you take time to explore the second-trimester pregnancy options in Florida available to you.

From abortion procedures to the various forms of parenting and adoption, here are your second-trimester pregnancy options:

Second-Trimester Abortion Options

If you’re considering terminating your pregnancy through abortion, there are a few options available in the second trimester. It’s important to note that because you are no longer eligible to take the abortion pill after the first 10 weeks of pregnancy, you will only have access to surgical abortion procedures.

The two second-trimester abortion options include:

Dilation and Evacuation

Also referred to as a D&E abortion, this process is typically available in the 14-28th weeks of pregnancy. In this procedure, the cervix is dilated and a suction device is used to remove the fetus from the uterus.

Dilation and Curettage

D&C abortions are available to women in the first 20 weeks of pregnancy. In this surgical procedure, the cervix is dilated and the pregnancy tissue is scraped from the uterus using a tool called a curette.

Abortion is a serious medical procedure and may be accompanied by side effects and severe health risks. Because of this, it’s recommended that women receive an ultrasound scan and a medical consultation. These services are provided at no cost to you at Palm Beach Women’s Clinic.

Adoption

Adoption can be a great option for women who are not yet ready to parent but don’t feel like abortion is right or safe for them. Perhaps you feel as though it’s too late for you to prepare and create an adoption plan — thankfully, adoption plans can be created at any stage of pregnancy.

In an open adoption, you’re able to make important choices for the baby, including what family they are placed with and what kind of contact you’d like to have after birth. For women who do not wish to remain in contact with the child, a confidential adoption plan may be fitting.
